Project Details

The Walmart distribution center in Mebane, North Carolina, stands as a landmark project completed in 2016. Original project documents included reinforced concrete pavement as the base bid, with roller-compacted concrete (RCC) presented as an alternate. The owner selected a value-engineered RCC pavement design proposed by Morgan Corp. and approved by the engineer of record.

For this site, Morgan Corp placed approximately 84,000 square yards of 10.5-inch-thick RCC for truck access roads, parking areas and loading docks. Crews also installed 17,000 square yards of 6-inch-thick RCC for associate access roads and parking. This marked the very first use of RCC pavement at a Walmart distribution center.

Before making their final decision, key owner representatives visited several Morgan Corp RCC projects that were already in service. During these visits, they observed that there were no pavement failures beneath the tractor‑trailer dollies at any of the facilities. This was particularly noteworthy, as failures under dollies had been one of their primary concerns with other pavement systems used at their sites. Based on this proven RCC performance, the owner selected RCC for its long‑term durability, low maintenance requirements, significant cost savings, and expedited construction schedule.

The American Concrete Pavement Association recognized this exceptional work with the 2016 Gold Award for RCC Pavements in the industrial category. Building on the success seen in Mebane and subsequent projects, Walmart now chooses RCC as the preferred paving solution for numerous distribution center developments across the United States.
