As H-E-B continues to expand its distribution network across Greater Houston, Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) was selected to deliver the speed, durability, and cost-efficiency required for the grocer’s new Hempstead Retail Support Center (H2). The project called for a hard-working pavement solution capable of standing up to constant tractor-trailer traffic while being installed on an aggressive schedule shared with multiple active construction fronts.

The project features 297,000 square feet of 8-inch RCC and 516,200 square feet of 10-inch RCC — more than 813,000 square feet of pavement in total — placed over a 10-inch cement stabilized subgrade to provide a stable, long-lasting foundation for heavy freight traffic. The scope also included 21,921 linear feet of 6-inch curb. Remarkably, the entire RCC paving scope was completed in just 38 paving days, showcasing the rapid construction speed RCC is known for.

One of the defining challenges of the project was sequencing. Paving operations had to be carefully coordinated around active utility installation, construction of the grocery building, and construction of the utility plant — all proceeding simultaneously on site. A complex, phased paving schedule allowed crews to keep pace with the broader construction team without sacrificing the speed advantage RCC offers, keeping the overall project on track for H-E-B’s aggressive timeline.

The H-E-B distribution campus in Hempstead, Texas, will enable the grocer to expand its supply chain network, better serve its growing customer base around Greater Houston, improve store delivery times, reduce transit costs, and create local jobs. RCC’s ability to deliver a heavy-duty, formless pavement section quickly — without the added cost and schedule impact of steel reinforcement — made it the clear choice for a distribution facility where every paving day directly affects the broader construction timeline.
