Project Summary:

The Colonel’s Island Terminal is a very busy hub for import, storage, and export operations. To boost its capacity for handling diverse merchandise, such as mining equipment and crated goods, a major RCC pavement project was undertaken. This project included the installation of approximately 130,000 square yards of 12-inch RCC and 250,000 square yards of 10-inch RCC, all laid over a 6-inch cement-stabilized base layer.

Building on the proven success of previous RCC projects at the terminal, RCC was selected once again for its outstanding abrasion resistance, particularly under tracked equipment. RCC also offers the advantages of fast construction, early operational readiness, and significant cost savings to build and own over the service life of the pavement.

The RCC mixture was carefully optimized to allow for placement in a single, uniform lift, ensuring it met the project’s requirements for density, abrasion resistance, strength, and aesthetics. All virgin aggregates had to be transported from out of state. The base layer was designed to minimize the use of virgin aggregates and capitalize on in-situ sandy soils and readily available recycled materials. The 6-inch base layer was built using cement-treated in-situ soils, blended with recycled asphalt materials or crushed stone, to deliver a durable and non-erodible foundation for the RCC surface layer.
