Project Details:

The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) is constructing an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) on an approximately 272-acre property owned by ASPA in Montgomery, Alabama. The purpose of the new facility is to reduce congestion at the Port of Mobile and provide an alternate shipping option for customers in central Alabama. The facility will consist of two 3,500 linear foot process rail tracks, one 3,500 linear foot support rail track, a maintenance building, and an administration building. Container stacking areas will be located adjacent to the process tracks. Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is uniquely suited for this application, providing the structural capacity and stiffness required to support heavily loaded container stacking without rutting or long-term deformation.

The project was designed by EHM&T, with Ragnar Benson serving as the general contractor and AG Peltz Group, LLC. as the RCC paving subcontractor. To meet the facility’s loading requirements, AG Peltz Group is placing over 31,000 square yards of 18-inch and 12-inch dual-lift RCC pavement. The team utilized both ABG and Vogele high-density pavers and mixing material on-site with a Rapid International 400 pugmill.

RCC provides a combination of fast construction, cost-effectiveness, exceptional durability, and minimal maintenance, making it an ideal pavement solution for heavy-duty industrial applications like this intermodal facility.
